Occupant Warning Systems, Emergency and Intercommunication Systems

The formula to a successful fire and emergency evacuation includes proper coordination and communication. Without these, in the event of an accident, building occupants will not know what to do, where to go, and what to expect—possibly causing panic, injuries, and  worst of all deaths.

Occupant, Emergency Warning, and Intercommunication Systems are normally found in a commercial settings: their function is to warn occupants of the danger or hazard that might exist in the building. However, there are a few function differences between occupant warning systems, emergency warning systems and intercommunications systems, including the following. For a more in-depth look into Occupant, Emergency Warning, and Intercommunication Systems, contact JLT Services by calling 07 3286 1663!

Occupant Warning System (OWS) Design and Installation

Occupant Warning Systems work by notifying building occupants when an alarm sounds due to fire or due to an emergency situation.  It works by activating the building’s Public Address system that sounds the evacuation signal and gives evacuation instructions through a voice message.

Emergency Warning and Evacuation Systems Design and Installation

An EWIS works differently than an OWS because it only sends the alert and evacuation instructions to the affected zone. It has two components:

  • The Emergency Warning System – Public address system with voiceover commands plus visual alarms and alert and evacuation sounds
  • The Emergency Intercommunication System – Emergency communication system for use by Fire Wardens

Both components must comply with the AS-mandated operation, colour, layout, and electrical characteristics for the equipment design and manufacture, which the JLT Services team strictly implements in emergency evacuation system design and installation.

When Should I Get an EWIS?

If your structure belongs to the following building classes, you are required by law to have an EWIS installed.

  • Buildings above 25 metres effective height
  • Certain class 3 buildings
  • Certain class 9a buildings; and
  • Certain class 9b buildings.
